Q.
Where will we stay?
A.
Accommodation is at Sōan.
It is a traditional Japanese house built around 150 years ago,
surrounded by natural materials such as wood and earth.
Sōan is not operated as a general accommodation,
and is available only as part of the retreat program.
Rooms are shared in a tatami-style Japanese room,
and futons are provided for sleeping.
The toilet is Western-style with a modern flush system,
and includes a bidet (washlet).
There are no sofas,
and the space is centered around sitting on the floor.
This is to preserve the tactile quality of tatami,
which is an important aspect of Sōan.
However, chairs are available
for those who find sitting on the floor difficult.
They can be used for meditation or quiet conversation
in a comfortable posture.
Air conditioning is minimal,
allowing you to experience the seasonal atmosphere as it is.
If you prefer modern comfort or greater privacy,
we can suggest staying at a hotel on the island.
Bathing is arranged at a local hot spring
as part of the retreat.
