About the event

Tea ceremony by Sourei Suzuki (鈴木宗麗) - tea master.

Discover the World of Tea at Akatori-an in Tokyo’s Mejiro Garden

Step into the serene Akatori-an (赤鳥庵), a charming single-story wooden structure with a tiled roof, crafted in the elegant sukiya architectural style, nestled within Tokyo’s Mejiro Garden. Immerse yourself in the timeless art and tranquil beauty of the tea ceremony.

It is said that tea made its way to Japan during the Heian period (794-1185), brought back by Japanese envoys like Saicho and Kukai from the Tang Dynasty (a historical period in the region now known as China). Over time, tea became integrated into daily life, enjoyed by everyone from commoners to feudal lords and shoguns. Eventually, during the Edo period (1603-1868), tea culture evolved into what we know as the “tea ceremony,” blending with Zen philosophy.

At the heart of both Zen and the tea ceremony lies a pursuit of simplicity. This involves an appreciation for quiet beauty, finding elegance in the imperfections of nature, and embracing the concept of “ichigo ichie” (一期一会), meaning “once in a lifetime.” This principle emphasizes that no two moments are the same and that each moment is a treasure.

Another shared aspect of Zen and the tea ceremony is their reliance on non-verbal communication, where actions often speak louder than words.

We invite you to experience the profound world of the tea ceremony, where every sip and gesture holds a deeper meaning.
